How are forage crops different from pastures in forage budgeting?

Forage budgets can be useful tools to help refine stocking rates on native or sown pastures and forage crops. The same process is used. Estimating the start yield for forage crops will be more difficult as it can vary greatly with sowing density and species. Talk to your seed supplier about estimating forage crop yields.

For forage crops,  residuals levels may be set much lower.  As forage crops have more palatable leaf (as do many sown pasture species), a ‘feed eaten as a proportion of palatable pasture’ result greater than 30% is not of concern to diet quality or liveweight gain.
