What are the different types of reports, and how do I interpret them?

The reports generated within the Stocktake Plus app combine the information you input with pasture growth models. The information you input includes the characteristics of your paddock (areas, land types), monitoring information (pasture and soil condition along with the percentage of area covered by trees and the tree basal area (TBA), stock and rainfall.

The reports are only as good as the information you input, so use caution in interpreting the results if you are unsure about some of the underlying information you have entered.

Property Carrying Capacity Report & Site Land Condition Report

  • Overall land condition
Overall ‘ABCD’ land condition is generated by using the lowest score of your pasture and soil condition assessments. For example, if soil condition rated 2 and pasture condition a 3, the overall grazing land condition score would be C. Read more about ‘ABCD’ grazing land condition.
  • Present and potential pasture growth estimate
Present pasture growth is calculated using your chosen land type and nearest town (climate station) — for example: Brigalow with blackbutt (FT04 Capella)” — and combines this with your land condition and TBA assessment. Stocktake Plus looks up the Pasture Growth Models for that land type and town and then discounts it based on land condition, percentage of area covered by trees and their density (measured as TBA).

Potential pasture growth uses the same process but calculates the pasture growth for that land type and town using ‘A’ condition and your user specified ‘A’ condition TBA. This gives the user an understanding of how much pasture could be grown, if land condition could be improved.

  • Present and potential carrying capacity
Carrying capacities within these reports refer to long-term carrying capacities (LTCC), considered safe over a 10+ year time frame given average climatic conditions.

LTCC are often considered conservative by industry standards, however they provide a benchmark of “where we are at now” (current carrying capacity). They also help identify options for improving the grazing strategy, and the likely benefits, at least in terms of increased carrying capacity (potential carrying capacity). The financial consequences of different options can then be compared using various financial tools which are not part of the Stocktake Plus app.

Stocktake Plus determines LTCC based on expected average long-term pasture growth for each land type, employing calculations that account for a safe level of pasture use by grazing stock and the average intake requirements of those livestock (converted based on adult equivalents AEs).

Results are shown as AEs based on the paddock or site area. To covert back to AE/ha simply divide the AE by the area of your paddock/site.

Forage Budget Report

The forage budget reports reflect the results for a saved forage budget. Read more about forage budgeting.

Stock Report

The Stock Reports will display a selected stock record, showing stock numbers, classes and AEs for each paddock within your property.

Rainfall Report

Rainfall records are collated into this report on a daily basis, with monthly and annual totals calculated.
